The customer

Museus de Sant Cugat is the network of museum spaces managed by the City Council of Sant Cugat del Vallès (Barcelona).

This organization manages assets of significant heritage value, notably the Monastery of Sant Cugat, a jewel of Romanesque and Benedictine architecture, as well as centers dedicated to contemporary art, local history, and popular culture.

Its main mission is the preservation, dissemination, and promotion of the city’s historical and artistic heritage.

The objectives

In 2022, the institution identified the need to renew its digital presence. Beyond visual obsolescence, the main pain point lay in internal operations and the lack of interactivity for remote users. The key challenges were:

· Limited editorial experience: The previous platform was rigid and complex, severely limiting the editorial team’s autonomy.

· Lack of immersion: The website did not reflect the architectural richness of the physical spaces, relying mainly on static information.

· Technological obsolescence: A robust infrastructure was required to scale functionalities without technical bottlenecks.

The main goal was to develop a website that would function both as an efficient working tool for editors and as an enhanced user experience for visitors.

The solution: an open-source platform focused on editors

Infinitum Digital proposed a strategy based on open-source technology to ensure flexibility and avoid vendor lock-in. The intervention was structured into four phases to guarantee operational and experiential excellence:

1. Consulting

Before starting development, UX consulting was carried out to align business goals with the needs of both editors and visitors.

  • Definition of project objectives and KPIs.
  • Restructuring of the information architecture to facilitate navigation and content discovery.
  • Creation of wireframes to validate navigation flows.

2. Design and accessibility

The digital image was refreshed while ensuring brand consistency and prioritizing inclusion.

  • Mobile-first design: priority focus on mobile devices adapted to institutional communication.
  • Accessibility compliance: adjustment of templates and contrast levels to meet current regulations, ensuring universal access.

3. Technical build on WordPress

A robust WordPress implementation was chosen, integrating advanced visualization and management technologies.

  • Immersive 3D experience: integration of 3D navigation systems into key museum content, allowing users to take realistic virtual tours from any device.
  • Advanced customization (Custom Fields): configuration of custom content types so data entry is intuitive, eliminating the need to work directly with code.
  • Event automation: implementation of an Event Calendar with automated registration and capacity management.
  • Security: deployment of integrity systems to protect critical infrastructure.

4. Implementation and training

The final phase focused on knowledge transfer to ensure full client independence.

  • Migration of the content tree to the new architecture.
  • Integration of multilingual functionality via Google Translate.
  • Editorial team empowerment: technical training focused on self-management. This led to a substantial improvement in editorial experience (AX), drastically reducing time to market and giving the Museus team operational autonomy.

Outcome

Museus de Sant Cugat now has a solid digital tool. The new website not only meets accessibility standards and offers high-impact 3D virtual tours, but it has also transformed internal operations: the management team now has the flexibility needed to publish and manage activities in real time, ensuring continuous heritage dissemination without technical friction.
