UNIR, at the forefront of digital transformation

The Ed Tech IBEXA platform from the PROEDUCA Group has revolutionized online education by allowing the efficient, flexible, and multichannel management, distribution, and reuse of educational content, both for UNIR students and for all those in the parent group, optimizing the educational offer and integrating more than 250 publishers into a global collaborative ecosystem.

The client

The PROEDUCA Group brings together various institutions specialized in online education, with the aim of meeting the educational needs of society. It is made up of Unir Spain, UNIR Mexico, CUNIMAD, Fundación Colombia, the Newman Graduate School in Peru, and MIU City University Miami in the USA. With offices in several countries in Latin America and Europe, its virtual presence has allowed 114,000 students from over 90 countries to successfully complete their studies. Currently, 60,000 students regularly access their online training. The group manages 319 degrees and over 3,000 subjects, supported by 150 editors operating 24/7. Proeduca distributes its content across 3 continents, covering 5 faculties and 2 schools.

The objectives

The objective of Grupo Proeduca was to develop an Ed Tech platform that integrated components of CMS (Content Management System) and LMS (Learning Management System), capable of meeting the demands of multiple publishers and managing a high volume of students, all while ensuring scalability and flexibility, without compromising stability or security.

· Convert all the content stored in over 4,000 unstructured documents into structured information that could be efficiently processed and managed.

· Facilitate the supervision and editorial validation of content.

· Efficiently distribute educational content through different LMS solutions.

· Distribute the content in PDF, HTML, and XML formats in a unique and centralized way.

· Structuring learning objects to facilitate their reuse in different contexts.

· Solving the huge difficulty of modifying educational content online.

· Centralize the content and provide universal access to all editors in the group.

The project

An ambitious Ed Tech platform that meets the needs of publishers and students.

Structuring the content

The first challenge of the platform was to transform over 4,000 unstructured documents into structured information for efficient management. This was essential because these documents contained the organization's history and followed the logic of study creation. A special labeling was implemented in the Word headers to recognize the structure and hierarchy of the contents.

Editorial supervision

To facilitate supervision and editorial validation, editors, after importing a topic, can preview the content in HTML and PDF from the backend to verify its content and format. If they need to make improvements, they can use the advanced editing functions available in IBEXA DXP.

The Multi LMS distribution of content

The distribution of content in educational environments is complicated and not very scalable, as it requires manually uploading the content to each LMS used. This challenge is exacerbated in large organizations with multiple LMS.

At UNIR, the integration capabilities of IBEXA DXP have been leveraged to develop a control panel that facilitates content distribution, making it agile and scalable to Sakai, Moodle, and Canvas. From this panel, editors can select the data source of the classrooms, choosing whether the content will be consumed directly from IBEXA or imported into the LMS. This integration between Ibexa DXP and all the LMS of the Group is one of the most advanced and intuitive in the market.

Multichannel marketing

Multichannel output is essential for proper dissemination of educational content. Thanks to the Headless capabilities of IBEXA DXP, it is possible to distribute content in PDF, HTML, and XML in a unique and centralized way, while also maintaining the flexibility to adapt to other channels or formats that the University may wish to explore (apps, Web2Print, etc.).

Content reuse

The educational content can be adjusted according to the pedagogical approach, and one of the main objectives has been to structure Learning Objects to be reusable in different educational contexts and purposes. This facilitates management and synchronization in the classrooms of each campus. The solid modeling of the content, the interchangeable hierarchical structure, and the reusability capability of IBEXA DXP have been fundamental in achieving this, greatly benefiting the editors.

Content as a modifiable asset

One of the problems identified by UNIR was the difficulty of modifying content in educational environments, especially with solutions that create encapsulated Learning Objects, which complicates change management. This problem is exacerbated when the content is distributed across different campuses and LMS. IBEXA has solved this problem by linking the content of Learning Objects directly to our repository, avoiding the export of the common cartridge. This allows any corrections or updates to be automatically propagated to all campuses and LMS, preventing the content from becoming obsolete.

The content federation

The PROEDUCA group platform has become a global solution by federating content and providing access to a common repository for all publishers. The detailed separation of content and form in the IBEXA repository, along with the ability to offer specific multi-channel output tailored to each university, has facilitated collaboration among more than 250 publishers who share, customize, and distribute their learning objects.

Solution: an integration hub that manages and distributes the educational offerings of the Proeduca group in a federated and multichannel manner

The Proeduca Group has implemented Ibexa DXP solutions to carry out its disruptive and innovative online education strategy, achieving significant improvements in scalability, personalization, and user satisfaction. The result is a hub that integrates, manages, and distributes educational offerings in a federated and multichannel manner.

  • Special tagging in Word headings that allows recognizing the structure and hierarchy of content objects.
  • Incorporation of a preview from the administration panel (backend) of the content in HTML and PDF, with the option to edit the content using the editing options of Ibexa DXP.
  • Development of a control panel in Ibexa DXP to integrate the different LMS solutions: Sakai, Moodle, and Canvas.
  • Utilization of Ibexa DXP's Headless capabilities for the correct distribution of content in PDF, HTML, and XML.
  • Solid modeling and interchangeable hierarchical content structure to facilitate comprehensive management and synchronization across different classrooms on each campus.
  • Avoid encapsulating content from other systems and allow Ibexa DXP to link the content of different learning objects directly to the repository.
  • Use of the Ibexa DXP repository as a global solution for content distribution and specific multi-channel output for each center.

Looking to the future: next steps

The challenges of the project do not end here: with the aim of improving the user experience of students, editors, and the entire educational ecosystem that makes up the PROEDUCA Group, a research and development work is being carried out as a result of the close collaboration between the teams of UNIR, Ibexa, and Infinitum Digital.

The purpose of this task is to expand the scope of the platform to other areas of the educational business that facilitate contract management, content creation and supervision, plagiarism management and review, the creation of a personalized dashboard by administrator role, a custom module generator, or the existence of a content creation assistant for the different courses available.
